CreateAthon lightbulb

The Wellesley CreateAthon will bring together around 100 middle-schoolers and high-schoolers from Wellesley who have a passion for learning and innovating. These students will form teams, generate ideas, and create an app. This 6-hour event will feature speakers, engaging workshops, and prominent judges.

    • As a lead-up to this year's STEM Expo, WEF we will be holding the first-ever "Wellesley CreateAthon" on Saturday, March 25th from 10am - 4pm.
    • During the event, which is open to middle and high school students who live or go to school in Wellesley, participants will design and create a mobile app that addresses a problem facing our community.
    • The CreateAthon is the brainchild of WHS Computer Science students, including Ethan Chiu and Eleanor Boyd, with support and mentorship from WHS Math and Computer Science teacher Dr. Robert Cohen.
    • The day will begin with small group workshops that focus on identifying a community problem that can be addressed with an app, creating a paper prototype of the app, and translating the paper prototype into a functional app using MIT App Inventor (made available to WHS by a WEF grant).
    • Throughout the day, students will work together in teams alongside high school mentors, experienced in App Inventor, who will guide the groups in prototyping their ideas.
    • Lunch, snacks and opportunities to recharge will be provided.
    • The day will culminate with a reception including short presentations by the groups and prize awards. Parents and other community members are invited to attend.
    • Judges from industry and the community will assess the work of the groups in categories such as creativity, viability and productivity. Prizes include drones and tech company visits. Winning teams will also be recognized at the STEM Expo on Saturday, April 8th.
    • All participants and volunteers will receive t-shirts designed in collaboration with the WHS Computer Science Club.
    • The event is free, but space is limited so please reserve a spot now!
