KINDERGARTEN---GRADE 12

1. Digital SLR Camera for Stop-Frame Animation

Doug Johnson, Stacey Piwinski, Jen Stabnick, Rich Willemann

Olympus E20N SLR Digital Camera, Microtech 1GB Microdrive, Olympus AC7U Adapter. This is an exciting opportunity for elementary, middle school and high school students alike, allowing them to bring their artwork to life. The camera will be shared between the schools.

 

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GRANTS

2. Author Visit: Patricia Polacco

Nora Tracy Phillips, Wellesley Creative Arts Council

WEF had contributed towards this proposal. Ms. Polacco’s body of work is a core part of the 3rd grade literature curriculum. Every 3rd grader in town and many 4th and 5th graders will have the opportunity to attend this presentation. It is hoped that this experience will deepen the students’ appreciation of how an author translates personal experience into meaningful literature.

3. Fiction/Non-Fiction Companion Books to Support Genre Literacy

Barbara Noun, Martha Gilbert, Rachel McGregor, Upham School

As a part of the language arts program, the first grade studies fiction and non-fiction texts. Children in the first grade are expected to read and listen to fiction and nonfiction texts so that they have familiarity and understanding of the differences between them. WEF has funded the purchase of fiction and nonfiction companion books.

4. Model Technology Project

Melissa Galdke, Lesley Reilly, Sharon Hobbs, Tom Plati, Hunnewell School

Kidspiration computer licenses, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Macromedia Dreamweaver MX, Digital Camcorder

The model technology project hopes to take advantage of new technology tools to increase communication between home and school, to provide a window for sharing best practices across the district, and to utilize software to effectively help students achieve learning goals.

5. Production of Visual Materials and Early Reading Materials for the Elementary Spanish Program

This project will produce eight sets of visual materials and beginning reading materials for instructional use in the elementary Spanish program. The Spanish curriculum is based on the philosophy that young children best acquire a foreign language through total immersion. There is no translation into English and there are no textbooks. The new materials will help to give consistency to the Spanish program throughout the elementary schools.

6. Elementary Climbing Walls

Karen Perry, Joyce Tolken

The climbing walls are in various stages of integration in each school. The walls are used for warm up, climbing, strength, and beginning concepts for project adventure. Funding allows for the purchase of additional climbing wall components.

7. Agility Ladders

Ann Hoffman, Hunnewell School

The versatility of the ABC agility ladders will enhance the existing jumping and landing unit in the elementary curriculum. It is particularly appropriate for Hunnewell School because of the very limited space for activity. The ladders provide the opportunity to increase cardio-respiratory and muscle endurance, muscle strength, agility, flexibility and coordination.

8. Lacrosse

Mickey Walsh, Fiske School

The grant will facilitate the purchase of modified equipment designed for elementary students. This is a sport that requires cardio-respiratory endurance, agility and hand eye-coordination. It teaches some basic team concepts while working on fitness.

9. Strength and Conditioning

David Rota, Bates School

Funding will help to develop a fitness circuit (obstacle course) focused on strength and conditioning using age appropriate equipment and materials.

10. Fine Motor Kits

Margo Zelermyer, Hardy School

These kits include a variety of developmentally appropriate materials to develop hand strength, stability, endurance and grasp for kindergarten students.

 

11. Art Portfolios

Diane Redfield, Margot Boyd, Jen Stabnick, Stacey Piwinski, Amy Squillante, Rich Willemann, Fiske and Hunnewell Schools

Forty portfolios to house prints and reproductions for the art appreciation program.

 

MIDDLE SCHOOL GRANTS

12. Using iMovie to Document Student Thinking and Progress in Math

Deb Levine, Mary Fitzgerald, Yolanda Rodriguez, Jeff Williams, John D’Auria

Digital camera, battery pack, Sound Grabber Mike, Tripod-Bogen with bubble pan, carrying case, scanner,mini DV tapes. This equipment will be used in the 6th grade special education inclusion math class. Special education and regular students will be interviewed to document assessments of each unit taught. This will help teachers to understand how students learn best.

13. Art Computer Applications

Painter 7 by Procreate

This software is a complementary program to Photoshop yet is geared more specifically to the painter as a computer studio artist. It will encourage the development of the artist’s "hand" in computer generated art without the reliance and dependency of scanned or stored photographic images.

14. Stability Ball Workout

Stability Balls and mats for the middle school fitness center

The focus of this project is to teach students how to improve balance, flexibility and core strength.

HIGH SCHOOL

15. Digital Art and Design Curriculum Enhancements

Total training for Photoshop & and Web CD- ROM, Lightshow 3D scanning system.

16. Diversity Mural

Jill Callahan, RH Willemann

The design and creation of an eight panel fine art mural on the theme of racial,

cultural, and religious diversity. The completed piece will be displayed in a prominent location on the student mezzanine and will help represent the people and lifestyles reflected in the WHS community.

 

17. WHS Music Lab---3 Workstation Synthesizers

Steven Scott, Sandi Nicolucci, Kelley Squires

In five years the "Beginning Music Technology" has grown from 2 classes of 8 students to three classes of 12 students, and one class of 12 in "Advances Music Technology". The addition of 3 synthesizes will complete the necessary number of workstations to accommodate the students.

18. Youth Leadership Development and Community Service

Sandy Goldstein, Lynne Novogrowski, Thom Hughart, Rene Mirkin

This program is designed to provide the participating students with a foundation of leadership training and an awareness of community service needs. WEF provided seed money for project materials, text, and speakers.

19. Books in Common

Ronna Frick

The entire WHS community and the faculty and staff would read the same work as summer reading. After the work was discussed in class, the author would be invited to the school for a day to speak at 2 separate assemblies. Funding provides a speaker fee and limited funding for the purchase of additional books to be made available at the library.
